Basic info on Sheffield Universal Education Collective:

The Sheffield Universal Education Collective is a recently formed body of rank and file union activists and workers in the higher education sector of Sheffield. Our aims are:

1) to provide a free and radical, and an open and democratic, education space in the city;

2) to offer sessions that both critically think about the world around us and explore means to changing the world around us;

3) to employ innovative and inclusive pedagogies.

We have been inspired by the recent waves of student protests and activism, and wish to link up with such students, and others, in a productive and creative educational exchange.

Our ambition is to include a wide layer of politically committed education practitioners in the city, from HE but also the school, further and adult education sectors.

So it is official. We are now CAKE (everyone). To celebrate this, we have launched our 1 page website until the full release of the full awesome website designed by CAKE’s truly: James Cotton.

SLAM JAM PT. 5! Sheffield, slam poetry night at BANK STREET ARTS

It’s been a while since our last SLAMJAM. This time we are teaming up Bank Street Arts (directions on the website www.bankstreetarts.com )in Sheffield.

This is YOUR moment to SHINE.

TeeBag Designs

At CAKE, we love to support cool and interesting projects that support emerging and established artists in regional areas such as Sheffield.  If that’s you, we want to hear from you!

As it is, we wanted to show respect to our first project – TeeBag Designs.

Run from the Kuji Shop at their new location (405 ECCLESALL ROAD), they support artists by showcasing designs by the Sheffield artist locals.

Each design is printed in limited editions and are available as prints/bags/tees depending on stock.

Not only this but everything is organic!

Location, Location, Location

Who wants to be held down to one place? Not us!  Oh, and it’s the recession. Which means 1 of 2 things: 1) LOTS of cool empty spaces! and 2) We don’t have rent money ALL-THE-TIME.  But we are passionate about art and experimenting.  So for now, our new location is secret. But I will tell you this, it will evolve and change depending on what project we will be under-taking.

Expect Sheffield to suddenly get alot more exciting in the early new year!

This also means that we are accepting project proposals!  Got an idea? Got some work  that you’re dying to exhibit for the whole world (Sheffield) to see? We could be suitable for your needs! Yes!

Unlike most of our contemporaries art-spaces in Sheffield – we are open minded. We understand that for art and debate to evolve it has to be multi-disciplinary in an age like ours!  We know that art and design come together now, we know that some illustration is more interesting than life-drawings and we know that our art is always evolving in cross-platforms from online to technology and even TV!  So whatever medium you work in, so long as you consider work as a ‘practice’ we will consider your work too!

Daniel Hall exhibition @ CAKE

Daniel Hall qualified from the Bartlett UCL with a degree in architecture that encouraged a highly conceptual approach. His work explores transient landforms, layering and exposure whilst his inspiration is sited within the nodes and moments of turbulence in both the natural and urban environment.

Hall explores themes of allegorical appearance, capturing the symbolic potential of a space, by means of a careful analysis into the ephemeral; he addresses the physical marks and traces left by the individuals who have passed through them.

Through attempting to redefine the modernist aphorism ‘form follows function’ with ‘form follows fiction’, he seeks to investigate the unsettling psychological experiences within the individual’s environment.

Daniel is showcasing an exclusive collection of images and visual media specifically created for CAKE art space.

The opening is at 7:30pm on thursday the 23rd of April @ CAKE.
